How Balers Work
Industrial balers can be stand-alone, or function as part of a material handling system. In either case, balers are fed loose material either on the side or top depending on the baler style. The infeed leads to a chamber where the material accumulates and is compressed into a bale. The finished bale is then bound by wire , plastic or string.
There are two main styles of baling machines – vertical and horizontal, referring to the direction of material flow in the baler. Vertical balers are typically employed in applications such as smaller facilities that generate less volume. Generally these units are loaded from the front or the top, and must be manually unloaded when a bale is completed.
Horizontal balers are typically introduced with loose material in one end, and it flows to the other end where the finished bale is ejected. Horizontal balers take up more floor space than verticals balers, but benefit from superior load capacity and automated features such as infeed and tying.
Bale size is an important consideration. The larger the bale, the less frequently it must be changed, and therefore required the least labor in terms of tying off bales, or moving them with powered equipment. Larger balers may prove impractical, however, where space is scarce.
Another consideration with respect to bale size is optimizing transport. Where many retail locations, for example, are sending back bales to a distribution center to be consolidated for potentially lengthy shipment to the recycling facility, sizing should be considered with respect to freight optimization.
Other labor-saving features include automatic in-feed of loose material, auto-tie, as well as automatic ejection of finished bales.
